⚖️ Purpose and Legal Framework
Statutory assessments are required by law and serve several important purposes:
- Measure pupil attainment against national standards.
- Track progress from Reception to Year 6.
- Inform parents and secondary schools about pupil performance.
- Hold schools accountable for educational outcomes.
- Enable national benchmarking and school comparisons.
The Department for Education (DfE) and the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) publish annual guidance to ensure schools comply with legal requirements. Schools must follow the Assessment and Reporting Arrangements (ARA) for each key stage.
